SEO isn't dead, but the click might be

As search results answer more questions on the page, the traffic marketers spent two decades learning to earn is quietly draining away. The skill has to move with it.

Every couple of years someone declares SEO dead, and every couple of years they are wrong. They are wrong again now — but the reflex to argue back misses a real shift underneath the hype. SEO is not dying. The click is.

The zero-click drift

Search results have spent years answering more and more questions directly on the page — snippets, panels, and now AI-generated summaries that synthesise an answer before you have scrolled to a single link. For a large and growing share of queries, the user gets what they came for without leaving the results page. That is the “zero-click” search, and it has been trending in one direction for a long time.

For marketers this is disorienting, because almost the entire discipline was built to earn a click. Rankings, snippets, titles, meta descriptions — all of it was optimisation toward the moment someone chose your link. Remove the click and the scoreboard everyone learned to read stops measuring the game being played.

Ranking without traffic

Here is the uncomfortable middle state we are actually in: you can rank well and still lose the visit. Your content can be good enough to be the answer, and be used as the answer, without the reader ever arriving. You won the ranking and lost the traffic.

The goal is quietly changing from “be the link they click” to “be the source the page is built from.”

That is not a small tweak to the old job. It changes what you optimise for. Being cited inside an answer rewards clean, extractable, genuinely authoritative content — and it rewards brand, because when the answer names a source, being the name people already recognise is worth more than being one blue link among ten.

What to actually do

The move is not to abandon SEO. The fundamentals — sound technical health, content that genuinely answers the question, real authority — matter more now, not less, because the bar to be the answer is higher than the bar to be an option. What changes is the surrounding strategy:

  1. Measure beyond the click. Track impressions, brand searches, and direct traffic, not just organic sessions. Some of your search value now shows up as people who arrive already knowing your name.
  2. Write to be quoted. Lead with the answer, structure for extraction, and make the individual passage self-contained enough to be lifted.
  3. Invest in the brand, not just the page. When discovery ends in a cited answer, recognition is the tiebreaker. That is a brand problem wearing an SEO costume.

SEO is not dead. But the version that quietly assumed a human would always click through is, and clinging to its metrics is the fastest way to conclude the whole channel is failing when in fact it is just moving.
